SOKHA’S DANCE

In Cambodia, a traditional form of dance called Aspara dates back to the seventh century, and tells a story. As Sokha describes it, the dance represents a polite, kind, gentle lady who welcomes the foreigner to her country. In the 1950s and ’60s, Aspara was performed at the end of the school year to honor the best student. Cambodian girls often begin training for this dance when they are very young so they will have enough flexibility in their wrists and feet to execute the delicate movements flawlessly when they are old enough.

Sokha did not have that opportunity when she was little, but she spent two years learning to dance the Aspara as part of her schooling. She went back to the village where her uncle and other family members lived to perform it for them, and honor the memory of her parents. She also wanted the Girl Rising visitors to see her dance.
